Description: This is the eighth edition of this frequently used handbook that has become a go-to reference in neonatal intensive care units throughout the United States. The book uses a very pragmatic outline approach to basically review all clinical situations a caretaker might encounter in the NICU. It has grown to over 1,400 pages (previous edition was about 1,100 pages) and so it no longer can be carried in a lab coat. This edition is dedicated to one of the original authors of the book and a leader in the field of neonatology, M. Douglas Cunningham. The previous edition was published in 2013.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a reference guide for neonatal caretakers at all levels. The book makes it easy to quickly retrieve information and includes sections on procedures and drug administration. The volume of information in this field has exploded over the last several decades and physicians, especially trainees, need a quick, dependable reference to inform their clinical decisions.
Audience: The book is aimed at all neonatal caretakers with a special emphasis on physicians and physician trainees. The comprehensive nature of this new edition certainly meets the needs of the intended audience. The authors are well known and credible authorities in this field and the nearly 100 contributors seem appropriately suited for their sections.
Features: The book is divided into eight sections with 156 chapters and eight appendixes. The sections cover all aspects of neonatal care from basic to advanced management of diseases, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases, and procedures and pharmacological issues. The unique aspect of this softcover manual as compared with its competitors is the section of "On-Call" problems. This section covers 34 problems that physicians or trainees might encounter and how to approach, diagnose, and treat each condition. Each problem is presented by discussing the symptom or abnormality, reviewing a differential diagnosis, presenting questions that should be asked, suggesting a focused physical exam, work-up, and laboratory tests, and developing a treatment plan. These discussions are comprehensive, yet concise — and the premier aspect of this book.
Assessment: Compared to other softcover neonatal handbooks (Cloherty and Stark's Manual of Neonatal Care, 8th edition, Eichenwald et al. (Wolters Kluwer, 2017), Manual of Neonatal Respiratory Care, 4th edition, Donn and Sinha (Springer, 2017), Residents Handbook of Neonatology, 3rd edition, Kirpalani (Decker, 2007), this is my favorite, and it has become the most widely used book in the NICUs that I have visited.
