I was born at home in Prosper Township June 9, 1930, the 8 child of Percy L and Edith Sorenson. Edith’s parents and Percy’s father homesteaded near Lake of the Woods north of Williams, MN in 1902 to 1906 where they lived out their lives.
I attended Williams High School and was a member of the class of 1948. Didn’t study much, but enough to remain eligible to enjoy acting in the class plays, playing football, basketball, track and coronet in the band. The team voted me captain of the football and basketball team. I think they made me captain because they didn’t have a mascot to make them laugh or to bolster their spirits in tough games! All the games were tough as we lost most of them, but we had a lot of fun! We couldn’t blame the coach as he was sleeping through his malaria relapses. It must have been the malaria medicine. Great guy though.
Best remembered, but best forgotten for helping lead a student demonstration to try to get the school board to renew the coaches contract. Had a good reason. He offered to give me $500.00 of his salary to help coach the football and basketball teams. Probably just wanted me to wake him up when the cheerleaders were performing. May he rest in peace.
Vocations were farming, trapping, cutting pulp, working seasonally as a firewatcher in the Prosper tower, tree planting, and foreman on an NYC game research crew for the Game Management branch of the DNR. Sorry about that last bit, but nobody is perfect are they?
Barbered in Idaho and Fargo ND also sheep shearer. Liked the sheep shearing jobs better as the sheep never complained when one nicked them when they were being shaved. Sheep even smelled better than range cowboys getting spruced up after hard weeks in the saddle or our brown cousins from south of the border seeking barber shop shade to dry the sweat of their hard labors. Yuk!!! Good honest hard working people though. If some of my poems are “YUK” just turn the page and hope for something better. Retired June 9, 1990 from Fairway Foods, a wholesale grocery warehouse after 22 years of service, otherwise known as very hard labor. Forklift operator etc. Member of Teamsters Union for 22 years. After retirement in 1990 have lived on the edge, on the edge of Lake of the Woods, that is.
Oh yes, the best is last. The people here who know her say the best thing I ever did was to marry Gwen.
