Overview

Greatest Hits, released by Curb Records in 2007, is comprised of 12 key songs from Roy Acuff's series of 1950s and '60s re-recording sessions for Hickory Records. Well-known Acuff songs like "The Wabash Cannonball" and "The Great Speckled Bird" originally date back to the 1930s and '40s, and are readily available on countless other Acuff compilations like The Essential Roy Acuff, released by Legacy in 2004. Those original recordings are preferable to these re-recordings, at least in a historical sense, as they're the basis for Acuff's renown. However, these re-recordings are still worthwhile, especially in terms of sound quality. Problem is, Curb doesn't do anything to signal that the songs on this CD are the re-recordings rather than the originals. The only clue about the contents -- besides the cheap sticker price and plain packaging, that is -- is a small note in tiny print on the back cover: "All of the recordings contained on this album are licensed exclusively through Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC." Not even inside the CD booklet is there any indication of when these songs were recorded. As for the re-recordings themselves, Ace Records reissued a lot of this material on two-fers such as Once More It's Roy Acuff/King of Country Music (2004) and Sings American Folk Songs/Hand-Clapping Gospel Songs (2004), which are much better packaged than this Curb compilation. ~ Jason Birchmeier
