Gretel's House
SZILVIA'S HOUSE is set in a town called Grace Harbor and follows a girl named Tiphany Stokes who is feeling forgotten about in her blended family and new school; Tiph has difficult younger siblings, too, and doesn't always get along with her stepmother. All she wants is the most beautiful doll in DiLucca's doll shop: an expensive European-made Gretel costing some $350-but she can't afford it. One fortuitous night she meets Szilvia, an older Hungarian woman recovering from stomach surgery and in need of companionship, and soon lands a job walking her dog for $25 a week. As Tiph's dog-walking leads her to make repeated trips to the doll shop, our tale is set in motion 1 / 5 when she finds herself unable to resist stealing the Gretel doll-and then, to her despair, quickly losing it. The second novel, SZILVIA'S DOLLHOUSE, is a fantasy story told from the perspective of Gretel. Gretel (as I'm sure you know) is also someone who has had a lot of trouble with her stepmother, and she has her own longing-not for a doll, but for a girl who will be hers and who she'll belong to. As the story unfolds, we see the lengths girl and doll must go to in order to come together, and along the way are treated to a glorious cast of characters: a magnificently-written cat, a hilarious bulldog who speaks in doggerel, and a school storyline in which Tiph finds her courage to act in “The Wizard of Oz,” the school play. This gorgeously written and thoroughly winning novel can be read different ways: as separate stories read straight through, or zigzagging between, though the author's personal preference is to switch between Tiph and Gretel's perspective.
