About the Author

Peter Hargitai is an American poet, novelist, and the translator of two iconic works from Hungarian
literature. He is the recipient of the Harold Morton Landon Translation Prize from the Academy of
American Poets for his translation of Attila József in Perched on Nothing’s Branch (1988). The same
book was listed by Yale critic Harold Bloom in his The Western Canon: The Books and School
of the Ages
. For his 1994 translation of Antal Szerb’s The Traveler, he received the Fust Milan Award.
Hargitai’s poem “Mother’s Visit No. 29” was published in Sixty Years of American Poetry, Introduction
by Robert Penn Warren, Preface by Richard Wilbur (Abrams, 1996). He is recipient of the
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. poetry Prize from the City of Miami Gardens, and he was appointed the
first poet laureate of Gulfport, Florida in 2015. In 2022, Hargitai was awarded
the Pro Cultura Hungarica medal.
