Description: Another excellent work in the Radiation Medicine Rounds edited by Charles R. Thomas, Jr., this is a synopsis of new approaches to the treatment of gynecological cancers, examining new radiological modalities, radiation oncological advances, new surgical oncological technologies, and new biological agents.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a multidisciplinary update on gynecological cancer treatment, highlighting the cutting-edge approaches currently in use.
Audience: The book is of interest to all professionals involved in the care of women with gynecological malignancies, including clinicians, trainees (fellows, residents, medical students), and nurses in all specialties involved with women's cancer care.
Features: Initial chapters describe the new advances in technologies in radiation oncology used in the treatment of gynecologic cancers with an emphasis on cervical and vulvar cancers. Techniques such as intensity modulated radiotherapy and image guided radiotherapy, and the use of newer imaging modalities such as PET and MRI for both diagnosis and monitoring treatment progress are well outlined. Chemotherapeutic options for endometrial cancers are presented as well as new biological interventions for all gynecological malignancies. New surgical approaches are then examined, including robotic surgery and the use of MRI for assessing tumor response during treatment with adaptive radiotherapy in mind.
Assessment: This is an excellent synopsis of all aspects of the recent advances in treatment with these modalities. As one has come to assume in this series, it is well written and edited. It is a very readable and informative book for clinicians and trainees in any of the specialties involved in the treatment of female malignancies.
