Flora MSc, PhD, FNASc, FAEB, FABP, FSSE, Associate Director&Head of Pharmacology and Regulatory Toxicology Department at Defence Research and Development Establishment, Gwalior, India, is engaged in research related to studying the mechanism and mode of action of heavy metals with particular interest in the development of a new molecule engineered for therapy of chronic arsenic poisoning.. He has delivered lectures in USA, Germany, Australia, Italy, Czech Republic, UK etc. He has published over 260 research papers in highly rated peer reviewed journals, including more than 60 Review article/ book chapters, which have been widely cited in international literature. Description: This book succinctly characterizes the epidemiological, toxicological, and adverse health effects of arsenic. Each chapter identifies and reviews the key literature that describes arsenic's chemistry, toxicological properties, health effects, and potential treatment options following acute exposure. Other pertinent literature is also presented, but is described in less detail than the key studies.
Purpose: The purpose is to detail the exposure, metabolism, toxicology, and potential treatment options for arsenic exposure, a known environmental hazard and a known human carcinogen.
Audience: The intended audience is health scientists, including nutritionists and dieticians, pharmacologists, public health professionals, students, epidemiologists, health workers and practitioners, agriculturists, botanists, policy makers and marketing and economic strategists. I agree with the designated audience, with the exception of policy makers and marketing and economic strategists.
Features: The book covers the chemistry and epidemiology of arsenic quite well. It presents the information in a succinct way using tables and figures that highlight the importance and consequences of human arsenic exposure. The description of the mechanisms of arsenic toxicity and carcinogenicity could be more detailed, since a clear mechanism of arsenic toxicity is yet to be defined. Despite no clear indication of genomic mutations in response to arsenic exposure, arsenic is still considered a carcinogen, which could have been discussed more as well.
Assessment: This comprehensive review of the new advances in arsenic toxicology results in one essential reference for all those involved in the field. The 28 chapters cover areas such as sources of exposure, methods of detection, metabolism, mechanisms of toxicity, adverse health effects, and medical countermeasures. The book is consistent with those covering areas of metal toxicology and is comparable in its content to other books in the field including Handbook on the Toxicology of Metals, 4th edition, Nordberg et al. (Elsevier, 2015) and Environmental Chemistry of Arsenic, Frankenberger (CRC Press, 2001), to name a few.
