Purpose: The book succeeds in providing an accessible and expert summary of state-of-the-art knowledge in the various issues surrounding the diagnosis and treatment of bipolar disorder. It is an incredible resource that can be used both as a text that is read from cover-to-cover and as a reference.
Audience: The book is written at a level of detail and scientific complexity that is suitable for psychiatric and neuropsychiatric physicians, both residents and attendings, as well as researchers in the field of psychiatry. Overall the book is likely to be less readable and relevant to those in the fields of public health and public policy, although specific chapters may be of interest.
Features: The book is divided into four main parts including diagnosis and epidemiology, biology, treatment in typical clinical situations, and treatment approaches by different methodology used. There is an extremely informative section discussing the current theories of the bipolar spectrum. Special coverage is devoted to bipolar disorder in childhood and adolescence with a separate chapter covering bipolar disorder in late life. The only significant shortcoming is the extremely limited discussion regarding the treatment of bipolar disorder in women of childbearing age. Ideally, future editions will include a chapter, similar to those for the extremes of age, dedicated to bipolar disorder in women, specifically during the childbearing years and including through pregnancy.
