This is a multiauthor compendium of anesthesia practice, intended to be a companion to the very popular textbook of anesthesia by the same editors. This text is intended to provide anesthesia practitioners and trainees with succinct, up-to-date information in a very readable form. The book is directed toward anesthesia practitioners and trainees. The majority of this book is devoted to tables and figures, which allows the authors to convey a large amount of information very concisely. The first section of the book is a review of the fundamentals of anesthesia science, including a review of the basic pharmacology of the more commonly used drugs in anesthesia. Most of the book discusses the management of anesthesia in the wide variety of clinical circumstances that anesthesia practitioners encounter. The book includes several excellent appendixes, including advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) protocols, an ECG atlas, and a difficult airway algorithm. The appendix of coexisting disease should either be eliminated or expanded, because it is very brief and not very useful. The table of contents is good, and the index is excellent for a handbook of this nature. This is an excellent handbook that anesthesia practitioners of all levels will find very useful.

In addition, reference material for acute care in the operating room or the postanesthesia period is provided. The anesthesia practitioner or trainee may benefit from this handbook. The editors are national authorities in the field and have summarized chapters from the parent text. The handbook can be divided into two parts. The first 52 chapters summarize the content of the parent hardbound text published earlier in 1997. Topics covered include fundamental principles of anesthetics as well as fluid and electrolyte therapy, anesthesia preparation and management, and postanesthesia and consultant practices. The second portion of the handbook includes resuscitation protocols from the American Heart Association, a brief summary of key medications used, and a summary of recent standards of the Anesthesia Society of America (ASA). Chapters are presented in outline form. Bold type identifies major subheadings. Tables are frequent. References are not provided in the handbook but may be found in the parent text. A detailed index with separate citation for tables is included. This is a comfortable, functional companion for the parent text that may be used by the intended audience. Resuscitation protocols and other content represent current thinking in this field. The publisher also has a CD-ROM and softbound review text available to accompany the handbook and its parentvolume.
