Description: This book serves to highlight salient clinical points with more detailed information available on the most common endocrine presentations or complications that would be seen in an inpatient hospital setting.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to provide a practical, easy-to-navigate reference guide for those taking care of inpatients with endocrine disorders and guidance about bridging care from inpatient to the outpatient setting.
Audience: The book is targeted to physicians who provide mostly inpatient consultative care; for example, endocrinology fellows, attendings, surgical and obstetrical specialists, primary care physicians, and hospitalists.
Features: The features of this book include mainly inpatient endocrine complications, covering definitions, diagnosis, management, and follow-up care for most endocrine disorders.
Assessment: This book is nicely organized in certain sections such as the "Pituitary Apoplexy" chapter and overall covers a good amount of information, fulfilling its intended purpose. However, there is a significant lack of consistency in the organization of the book. For example, some sections such as the "Hypocalcemia" chapter have confusing headings that are extremely long and would be more appropriate under the headings of the paragraphs. For example, in the "Hypocalcemia" chapter there is a section entitled "Hypocalcemia should be evaluated with an Estimate of Free Serum Calcium (Free Ionized Calcium or Total Serum Calcium Corrected for Serum Albumin), Serum Phosphate, Serum Magnesium, Serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D, and Serum Parathyroid Hormone (PTH)," among many other inappropriately long headings. Some sections are too simply written; for example, on page 129, the heading of a section is "Thiazide Therapy Should be Used with Extreme Caution in Those Also on Calcium and Calcitriol, Particularly if There is Concomitant Chronic Kidney Disease," then the body of the section only includes three lines of text. Overall, the topics covered are comprehensive, but the organization of the content could have been more unified.
