Description: This is the third edition of an overview of the latest diagnostic and treatment options for patients with liver diseases. It provides both print and online access to information on effective management of hepatitis (including new drugs for hepatitis B and C) and hepatocellular carcinoma, and the optimal use of genetic testing and noninvasive imaging techniques. The previous edition was published in 2004.
Purpose: Hepatology is a rapidly evolving field. The book succeeds in providing a concise, accurate, up-to-date, and readily accessible reference on liver disease background and management questions for trainees and practicing clinicians.
Audience: The authors state that the book is aimed at practicing gastroenterologists and hepatologists, internists, family practitioners, and trainees in gastroenterology, hepatology, and internal medicine. I believe the audience will be predominantly trainees, including residents, fellows, and physician extenders embarking on careers in gastroenterology and hepatology. The authors are certainly credible authorities in hepatology.
Features: The handbook covers the entire breadth of hepatology in 34 chapters, with ample use of colorful figures, outline formats, lists, and tables to convey information efficiently. Chapters are concise yet provide sufficient information and references as well as state-of-the-art summaries. A new feature in this edition online is the inclusion of more than 200 board review questions to help prepare for certification examinations.
Assessment: This is a relatively concise, updated, and well-written book that certainly justifies replacing the previous edition given the exciting recent advances in hepatology. The book is attractive and would be very useful to trainees. The ability to access the book online and the addition of board review questions offer significant advantages over competitors in the field.
