Description: This is a handy, easy-to-read compendium of nephrology with short chapters and many tables and algorithms. The fifth edition features extensive revisions and some additions compared to its predecessor.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide concise, yet sufficiently detailed, information to aid in the care of patients with nephrologic and hypertensive problems. This very worthy objective is mostly met, although the content of several chapters could be more current. For example, chapter 2 (radiology) contains a rather extensive list of indications for an intravenous pyeogram, a procedure which in reality has become almost obsolete. Similarly, chapter 35 (transplantation) fails to mention the increasing importance of C2 monitoring.
Audience: The book is intended and clearly written predominantly for residents and others preparing for board examinations in internal medicine, general internists, and family practitioners, and physicians in other specialties. The editors are well-established authorities in the subject matter and have selected faculty colleagues as well as fellows largely from their respective institutions to contribute the chapters.
Features: Essentially all important aspects of adult nephrology and hypertension are covered, with special emphasis on drug therapy for hypertension. The book's strengths are its comprehensiveness and conciseness. The many tables and algorithms further enhance its usability. Unfortunately, some of the information is outdated or incomplete.
Assessment: This book is a handy, affordable addition to any internal medicine residency program's reference library, in line, and partially overlapping, with other handbooks in the field, such as those of dialysis or kidney transplantation. Its revision for the current edition was absolutely justified.
