Overview

When Handbook of Normative Data for Neuropsychological Assessment was published in 1999, it was the first book to provide neuropsychologists with summaries and critiques of normative data for neuropsychological tests. The Second Edition, which has been revised and updated throughout, presents data for 26 commonly used neuropsychological tests, including: Trailmaking, Color Trails, Stroop Color Word Interference, Auditory Consonant Trigrams, Paced Auditory Serial Addition, Ruff 2 and 7, Digital Vigilance, Boston Naming, Verbal Fluency, Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure, Hooper Visual Fluency, Design Fluency, Tactual Performance, Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised, Rey Auditory-Verbal learning, Hopkins Verbal learning, WHO/UCLA Auditory Verbal Learning, Benton Visual Retention, Finger Tapping, Grip Strength (Dynamometer), Grooved Pegboard, Category, and Wisconsin Card Sorting tests. In addition, California Verbal learning (CVLT and CVLT-II), CERAD ListLearning, and selective Reminding Tests, as well as the newest version of the Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS-III and WMS-IIIA), are reviewed. Locator tables throughout the book guide the reader to the sets of normative data that are best suited to each individual case, depending on the demographic characteristics of the patient, and highlight the advantages associated with using data for comparative purposes. Those using the book have the option of reading the authors' critical review of the normative data for a particular test, or simply turning to the appropriate data locator table for a quick reference to the relevant data tables in the Appendices. The Second Edition includes reviews of 15 new tests. The way the data are presented has been changed to make the book easier to use. Meta-analytic tables of predicted values for different ages (and education, where relevant) are included for nine tests that have a sufficient number of homogeneous datasets. No other reference offers such an effective framework for the critical evaluation of normative data for neuropsychological tests. Like the first edition, the new edition will be welcomed by practitioners, researchers, teachers, and graduate students as a unique and valuable contribution to the practice of neuropsychology.

This is a compendium of normative data for today's commonly used neuropsychological test measures. The book includes a comprehensive review of 16 assessment measures and includes a history of the test, directions for administration, and relevant normative data. "The purpose, according to the authors, is to provide a compilation of normative data and critical reviews of normative reports of neuropsychological assessment measures. With the myriad of data reported in psychological literature, this book provides a necessary standardized set of normative data. It meets and exceeds the authors' objectives. The history, normative data, critical reviews of the literature, and directions for administration make it an invaluable reference. "This handbook was written for clinicians, researchers, and graduate students. The authors are credible in the field of neuropsychology and they are able to elicit the knowledge and support of the leading researchers in the field. "A strength of the book is its organization. It begins with useful background information on neuropsychological testing and addresses the basic knowledge of statistics necessary for understanding normative data. For each test, important details (usually overlooked by other books) such as the different forms of the tests and the validity of the measures are discussed. In addition, references are listed to direct the reader to the proper sources should a question arise that is not covered by the book. A shortcoming is the lack of normative data for members of different racial groups (i.e., African-American versus Caucasian). In addition, it would be helpful to include illustrations of the test stimuli. "This handbookcomplements the existing books available on neuropsychological testing such as Lezak's Neuropsychological Assessment (Oxford University Press, 1995) and Spreen and Strauss' Compendium of Neuropsychological Tests (Oxford University Press, 1997). It offers a comprehensive and well organized review that make it a necessary reference for clinicians and researchers. In addition to providing useful normative and statistical data, it provides insight into the application of assessment measures for diagnostic purposes.

Description: This is a collection of normative data for commonly administered neuropsychological instruments. Included are summary tables of normative data from numerous studies, detailed analyses of the normative studies for each instrument, and brief information regarding the tests themselves (e.g., history, cognitive constructs, and modifications). This book represents an updated and expanded version of the original published in 1998.
Purpose: According to the authors, the purpose is to present and discuss existing normative data for neuropsychological tests and provide a framework for judging studies that report normative data. The authors have clearly adhered to this objective, providing critical analyses of normative studies and a multitude of summary tables for normative data. From the perspective of an expedient information resource, there was a dire need for a book of this type and the authors have delivered.
Audience: This book is intended for graduate students, researchers, and busy clinicians, according to the authors. Undeniably, this book is appropriate for any of these individuals. On the other hand, it is not intended for those desiring to "learn" neuropsychology from this book. This may be misleading given the author's coverage of methodological concepts and psychometric issues in the introductory chapters, which fail to even begin to address critical issues in the practice of neuropsychology.
Features: The summary tables are the main strength of this book. They include locator and data tables, as well as meta-analysis tables for each instrument. These are nicely organized by instrument in a series of appendixes. The inclusion of study synopses and bulleted lists in the chapters are helpful when more specific information regarding a particular study is desired. The bulleted lists include both study strengths and considerations regarding the use of the study's data. While it is not surprising that these are the book's strength, especially given the author's objectives, their inclusion of material outside the realm of normative data is dubious. Readers will find cleverly inserted practical advice regarding test selection, administration, and test philosophy that is inadequately explored and clearly reflects the personal biases of the authors. Continuing this trend, the authors have included two of their own creations: Color Trails and WHO-UCLA Auditory Verbal Learning, which they espouse as "culturally fair," despite limited empirical evidence. Will readers still find the book useful? Undoubtedly, the answer is yes.
Assessment: This edition provides updated references and coverage of additional neuropsychological instruments that many clinicians will find useful. For practicing neuropsychologists at any level or students in training, this book is a worthwhile investment. It will likely find a semipermanent home on the desktop along with Spreen and Strauss's Compendium of Neuropsychological Tests: Administration, Norms, and Commentary, 2nd edition, (Oxford University Press, 1998) and Lezak et al.'s Neuropsychological Assessment, 4th edition (Oxford University Press, 2004).
