Description: This handbook describes the biological function of all known nutritionally essential elements. The research leading to our current understanding of the biological function of these elements is described as well as limited clinical correlates.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a handbook that encompasses molecular mineral nutrition for all essential mineral elements and which attempts to utilize this information in the definition of essentiality and mineral requirements when possible.
Audience: The audience is primarily students and professionals in the field of nutrition but the book can also act as a reference or starting point for students and researchers from other disciplines.
Features: The handbook format combines reasonably complete coverage of important topic areas with brevity. Reference lists for each chapter are quite extensive without being excessive.
Assessment: The overall quality of the book is good for the stated purpose. It will likely be used as a reference book rather than a textbook. Stated purpose of presenting and utilizing molecular nutrition information to define biological function and nutrient requirements has been met in only a few chapters. In this sense the book may be somewhat premature, although there is a clear emphasis on the description of the biological function of these essential minerals at the cellular level. The currency of the reference list for several chapters is not good. However, this may simply reflect a lack of current experimental data in these areas.
