It also focuses on common symptoms and disorders by system, including endocrine, respiratory, cardiac, orthopedic, neurologic, genitourinary, and gynecologic. For each disorder, symptoms, red flags, algorithms for differential diagnosis, related symptoms and findings, laboratory workup, treatment guidelines, and clinical pearls are discussed.

One of the major updates in this edition is a chapter dedicated to COVID-19. This chapter focuses on COVID-19 diagnosis, care and sequelae, including what to do after discharge from the hospital. Since the global pandemic has affected medicine as a whole, many of the chapters also discuss COVID-19 as a differential diagnosis. Newer and higher quality photos have also been added in several chapters to help illustrate techniques more efficiently, including new imaging modalities for chest pain.

Description: As a compendium of articles focused on the outpatient clinic setting, this is a book for clinicians who must frequently make quick diagnostic decisions and formulate treatment plans on the spot.
Purpose: As a reference, this handbook provides clear and concise approaches to many of the common outpatient situations clinicians may encounter, based upon the current evidence available. The editors have brought together an impressive group of subject matter experts who make their presentations concisely and expertly.
Audience: This is an excellent refresher for all those currently engaged in the outpatient practice of medicine and a tremendous foundation work for those just beginning their practice.
Features: The book is divided into 11 parts, generally coinciding with the traditional organ systems. Each part contains chapters addressing specific subjects such as screening/physical exam/health maintenance; end-of-life care/pain management/palliative; diabetes; obesity; hair loss; prostate problems; etc. Each chapter begins with an introduction and quickly moves to decision-making/differential diagnosis and key history and physical exam; followed by detailed description of specific diagnoses such as bacterial pharyngitis; the different types of anemias. Extensive tables and figures significantly help focus on the take-home points along with numerous references.
Assessment: This is a tremendously useful desk reference for busy outpatient clinicians. It is an easy read despite the depth of detail, and the tables add greatly to comparing and contrasting of the various concepts.
