Description: This manual of pediatric autopsy pathology contains instructions on how to perform autopsies and deals in detail with the most common diseases of pediatric age as seen at the autopsy table. The book is well illustrated and contains numerous tables, algorithms, and graphs of important data, such as body weight, length, and organ weights in fetuses during pregnancy and neonates in early stages of life.
Purpose: This was written as a guide to pediatric autopsies and a manual for prosectors, wishing to perform meaningful and comprehensive pediatric autopsies. These are worthy objectives, especially since there are no other books of this kind currently on the market. The authors have reached their stated goals.
Audience: Prepared for pathologists in training and practicing hospital pathologists, the book actually will be most useful for pediatric pathology fellows. Autopsy attendants, pathology assistants and clinicians, as well as medical students doing a rotation in pathology, will also find it useful. Dr Gilbert-Barness is a well known and highly respected pediatric pathologist and a published medical writer with several books to her credit.
Features: The book covers all the essential topics of pediatric pathology. It is divided into five parts covering general principles, techniques, developmental disorders, organ systems and metabolic disorders, and special considerations. The part dealing with organ systems and metabolic disorders is the largest, accounting for more than 250 pages. The book is well illustrated with macroscopic and microscopic illustrations which are almost all in black-and-white. A set of color illustrations is inserted in the middle of the book an accompanying CD-ROM contains additional color images. Most illustrations are excellent, but, unfortunately, there are too many microphotographs that are of substandard quality. Some gross photographs are also not the best. The schematic drawings are excellent and very didactic.
Assessment: This is a unique book and at the present time it has no competition. Hence it should be widely distributed to departmental and hospital libraries. It also belongs in the core library of every autopsy room. The best aspects of the book are the details about the performance of pediatric autopsies and the developmental charts and tables containing data useful for practitioners. I would have liked a more systematic approach to organ-specific diseases and a more structured description of various pathologic entities. Why couldn't the author have used the approach that was so successfully applied to some congenital bone diseases? Despite considerable shortcomings, this is a very useful book and it should be on the shelf of all autopsy and pediatric pathologists. With some additional editing to eliminate many cryptic sentences, correction of some typographical errors (including the lead motto in Latin), better organization to make the presentation of the material more structured and instructive, the next edition could be even better.
