Overview

Armstrong and the 1960 version of his All-Stars (which included trombonist Trummy Young, clarinetist Barney Bigard, pianist Billy Kyle, bassist Mort Herbert, drummer Danny Barcelona and singer Velma Middleton) are heard putting on their usual show at that year's Newport Jazz Festival. The repertoire (which includes "Indiana," a slapdash "Tiger Rag," two songs from the film High Society, individual features for the musicians and "Mack the Knife") offers no real surprises but Armstrong's enthusiasm and beautiful tone on the trumpet make this joyful CD (whose contents were released for the first time in 1994) worth having. ~ Scott Yanow
