Becca Merritt and Nick Rixey’s story continues with Nick’s proposal and Becca’s return to work in the ER after having been attacked by one of their military unit’s enemies. Narrator Seraphina Valentine uses a smooth, sweet voice for Becca, displaying her pride in her fiancé’s hard-won accomplishments. Valentine drops into a lower register for Nick, sounding gruff and staccato and belting out his favorite curse words without apology. Valentine’s greatest challenge is navigating the large cast of characters who populate Kaye’s Hard Ink series, many of whom surround Becca and Nick as they plan their wedding. Clear textual indications help Valentine portray each member of the extended military family without confusion.
