On the 3rd of July, on a mall parking lot, Warren Reese, in a remarkable feat of marksmanship, shoots a woman through the head. This begins a reign of terror as Warren, using a silenced sniper rifle, stalks the citizens of Raleigh, NC.
For reasons known only to him, Warren has begun his murderous campaign after witnessing the death of his mother and uncovering a secret kept from him and his brother Carl.
Their cruel and abusive upbringing at the hands of their monster if a mother, Luanne, has affected both boys, but Carl has managed to move on, leaving Warren damaged and broken.
The killings cause major headaches for Paul Weatherall, the interim chief of police in Raleigh, who wants only to retire. After no success in catching the killer, despite involvement from the FBI, Weatherall asks for help from an outside source and is sent Ken Glasgow, an ex-naval intelligence officer, who arrives in Raleigh to take a fresh look at the case.
Weatherall, short on officers, asks TV newscaster Suzanne Majors to team up with Glasgow and the pair begin an investigation of their own. It soon become apparent that there is a mutual attraction between the pair. Glasgow takes on additional baggage when he discovers information about his past and Glasgow must take time off of the case to react to facts which alter his life.
Warren the sniper puts on the pressure and the body count goes way up after he attacks a condo on a quiet Sunday. Weatherall's cops come up with a solid lead and the chief asks Glasgow to assist once more. Now it is up to Glasgow to use his considerable skills to put himself between Warren and his final target and bring an end to the case.
This novel was inspired by the Baltimore/Washington sniper killings from the 90's. The story is more than just about a sniper, but goes to the history and motives that cause someone to commit such mayhem.
