Overview

It's 1843, and siblings Cara and Will have no one but each other. Their father is somewhere in the New World and their mother disappeared after their home was destroyed in the Highland Clearances. To escape their orphaned situation, Will lies about his age to join the crew of a Hudson's Bay Company ship bound for York Factory, the last known location of his father. But Cara won't be left behind.

Maintaining their deception on the cross-Atlantic sail is just the first step in Cara and Will's journey. The pair each face challenges-icebergs, bears, storms, and fires, not to mention thievery and murderous revenge-and meet friends and foes along the way. Will they find their father and be able to make their own way in the New World?

Inspired by true events, Heart of the Hudson is a fast-paced, richly detailed adventure story with unforgettable characters, set against the backdrop of pre-Confederation Canada.

About the Author

Tracey Brown, of Scottish descent herself, became fascinated with the history of York Factory when planning a trip to Churchill, Manitoba. Research into the ship's logs, lost letters of Hudson's Bay Company employees, and other historical documents helped inspire Cara and Will's fictional adventures in Heart of the Hudson. An outdoor enthusiast, Tracey has encountered many bears during her time in the wilderness, including polar bears in Churchill. She lives in British Columbia.
