Gr 9 Up—Adolescence, a difficult time for many, can be all the more challenging for friends of individuals struggling with the topics in this series. Each title endeavors not only to educate but also to teach empathy for those coping with these issues. Recognizing warning signs and understanding the consequences, in addition to strategies and resources for seeking professional assistance, are covered. Psychological, physiological, and emotional aspects are explored with an aim at establishing an effective support system. Discussion questions to jump-start conversation with guidance counselors are included, making for a useful tool for youth unsure of where to begin. Special attention is given to peer pressure and the potential impact of social media on teens. Readers will also find examples of how to become involved without alienating friends, such as broaching uncomfortable topics in a nonconfrontational way, with emphasis placed on the importance of self-care for caregivers to more effectively offer support.
