Description: The title describes what the book covers - how to do drug calculations. Quizzes, a Spanish/English glossary, and a few articles are the extent of the online materials, which are supplemental and add little to the book. This update of the 2008 edition is needed.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide step-by-step instructions for solving drug calculations and for preparing and administering medications.
Audience: The author simply states the audience is students, although it is clear that the book is intended for nursing students. However, it could be used by anyone (even medical students) to calculate dosages of medicines.
Features: This book covers three different calculation methods commonly used to solve drug math problems: formula, ratio and proportion, and dimensional analysis. This book presents them side by side so readers can evaluate and learn all or just one. Case studies help teach critical thinking skills while applying math concepts. Math is difficult for many nursing students and this format enables them to select their preferred method for solving problems. I do not know of another book that has the three methods side by side.
Assessment: There are many drug calculations books. What makes this one unique is the way it teaches the three methods side by side. However, I do not agree with the elimination of the apothecary measures.
