About the Author

Robert Quackenbush (1929–2021), the author and illustrator of more than two hundred books for young readers, was a graduate of the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles and also had a master’s degree in social studies and a PhD in childhood education. Quackenbush’s many books include the Henry the Duck series, Detective Mole, the Miss Mallard Mystery series, Pete Pack Rat, and the Sheriff Sally Gopher series. He was the three-time winner of the American Flag Institute Award for outstanding contributions to children’s literature and winner of an Edgar Allan Poe Special Award for best juvenile mystery. He lived in New York City with his wife, Margery, director of NAAP. Their now adult son, Piet, was the inspiration for many of the author’s books when he was growing up.

PreS-Gr 1—Henry the duck is asked to babysit his friend Clara's baby nephew. Henry is not sure how to babysit but takes the job. More friends appear on Henry's doorstep and ask him to babysit, too, and suddenly a seemingly simple task becomes complicated. Henry struggles to take care of the growing number of those he is responsible for watching. The comedic cartoon illustrations show animals watching Henry through the window as he cares for the little ones, the babies messing up the house, and Henry's increasingly exasperated facial expressions. The doorbell is used to funny effect throughout the narrative to mark a new addition to the chaos. VERDICT Children will enjoy this playful story and totally relate to the theme of trying to keep up with and complete a difficult task.—Deanna Smith, Pender County P.L., NC
