About the Author

I'm Bill Southworth and this is my first book. It was inspired by my first grandchild, Henry, who was born last year. His curiosity and discovery of the world inspired me to write about my own. I've been enamored with science and technology for three-quarters of a century. I have invented stuff in a variety of fields, including computer operating software, electronic music, computer graphics and visualization, renewable energy, and data science for genomics. My love of chemistry and physics started when I was nine years old, with my first chemistry set and building a rocket and a radio at twelve. All my learning started with a question and a quest to find the answer. I tried to instill that thrill of discovery in this book. My love of life-long learning was instilled at MIT where I learned that I wasn't there to acquire knowledge but rather to learn how to learn... for the rest of my life.

This book used artificial intelligence to create most of the illustrations. I've been asked my views of whether AI is a force for good or evil. I'm sure that there were some writers, centuries ago, that were asked the same questions about the invention of the printing press. I view AI as another tool that expands the ability of a person to understand, learn and create.. Just more easily and faster than was possible before. I believe that, in the future, this will change the world by making all knowledge within instant reach and by making creativity and the ability to think beyond the obvious, the traits that will separate us from the machines.
