Overview

Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in the US and the third most recently linked to cancer deaths. The national annual incidence rate of colorectal cancer is approximately 148,000+, striking slightly more females than males. The lifetime risk of colorectal cancer is 5-6%, however patients with a familial risk (with two or more first or second degree relatives) make up 20% of the patients. Persons who carry genetic mutations linked to hereditary colorectal cancer are the most likely to develop the disease.

Description: This comprehensive book details basic scientific knowledge, clinically relevant algorithms, and the historical framework of hereditary colorectal cancer. This is the only book of this depth on this topic, to my knowledge.
Purpose: The authors set out to provide a single source of information on hereditary colorectal cancer. Like any edited book, there is some variability between chapters.
Audience: It is written for colorectal specialists, which may include surgeons, gastroenterologists, oncologists, and geneticists. The abundant chapters on the basic science behind recent developments might be of interest to the research community. The book would be an excellent definitive reference for any medical library. The depth and scope of this book would be beyond the needs of general surgeons or surgical residents.
Features: The book is quite expansive in its coverage of the early history and development of our understanding of genetic colorectal diseases. The scientific section is rather large and the genetics section has very detailed descriptions of a variety of topics. Other, more clinically relevant sections cover familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) and hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) as well as a variety of other polyp conditions; these sections contain numerous chapters and present a complete and detailed overview. The book also includes a review of genetic counseling around the globe.
Assessment: This is a high quality book that delivers specific and detailed information on hereditary colorectal cancer. There is no comparable book, and the information it provides would be very difficult to obtain from other sources in such a well-balanced and complete presentation.
