Overview

"Hindsight 2021 – because you can't MAGA this shit up" chronicles the journey of Trader Jonas, from his naturalization ceremony in Oakland in 2015 to the storming of the Capitol in 2021. A free trader at heart, and a journalist by trade, Jonas struggles with the premise and the promise of 'America First'. Before being able to understand what it will take to Make America Great Again, Jonas needs to understand what it took to make America. As he embarks on his quest to uncover the unitarity that makes sense of it all, the trail leads him from San Francisco to Washington D.C., Mexico City, Berlin, Shanghai and back into the Storm.

Starting with the Papal Bull that laid the enduring foundation of White Supremacy in America 500 years ago, to Martin Luther King Jr., who was assassinated fighting against it 50 years ago, identity politics have dominated every facet of America. They thrived under the Crown and under the Founders, survived the civil war and civil rights, before slowly fading into the subconscious bias level at the end of the 20th Century. There they hid in plain sight until in 2015 the presidential race descended into the basement on a Golden Escalator, from which they reemerged whiter, scarier and more supreme than ever.

Highlighting essential political, social, historical and curious events from the past 5 years, along with their leading figures and hidden agendas, Jonas takes the reader on a whirlwind tour that is as entertaining and enlightening as it is mind boggling. Hunting for answers in his pursuit of unitarity, Jonas connects the nonsensical dots that lead from the Descent to the Draining of the Swamp past the Anti-Immigrant Wall and the Muslim Ban right into the Rose Garden, where Obamacare and the Paris Accord are repealed. When Trade War was declared at the G-20 summit in Berlin, Jonas set out to seek trade truth and American Jobs behind the Great Firewall in China. After the Pandemic struck, and as Black Lives were finally about to matter, Jonas returned, just in time to witness the Great Fireworks of the Russian witch hunt and the Ukrainian fishing expedition.

In the meantime, in the America that has put itself first, the democratic ideals of common sense and common purpose have been trumped by the patriotic virtues of ignorance, wishful thinking and self-interest. The ensuing fight for the Soul of America hangs in the balance until a lethal virus and a coldblooded murder unleash a series of events that expose the hypocrisy and complicity of the Republican Party. Reaching the tipping point, a record numbers of Americans head to the 2020 Presidential polls, where they heed the wisdom of the age-old adage: "fool me once – shame on you; fool me twice – shame on me".

Having witnessed the spasms and failed prophecies of QAnon, the ill-fated Storm of American "Patriots" and the make-believe-lies of the 'Stop the Steal' myth, Jonas realizes that you can't MAGA this shit up ...

About the Author

Lars Johnsson makes looking into the future look easy. Throughout his life he made his mark through foresight, as chief astrologer of his high school newspaper, as pathfinder for his scout troop, as chemical engineer developing novel steam drying processes, and lately as innovator, entrepreneur and executive in Silicon Valley, with 3 successful start-ups in his past and a U.S. patent to his name.
