Description: This simply-written book has the engaging and genuine perspective of a recent medical school graduate with a very successful match placement.
Purpose: It is written to provide insight and guidance to students in the complexities of medical school and the match from the perspective of a recent graduate.
Audience: This book would appeal to the entering student who has the "book frenzy" described by the author. It may well also appeal to the third year student with "match anxiety" and has most application in this area, particularly for the student applying to surgical fields.
Features: This book is well organized and readable, and the author's organization and style make it a quick read for the student. The style includes illustrative anecdotes and a limited number of helpful illustrations. This approach, including advice about interviews and audition electives, is perhaps more geared to the surgical subspecialty career process than to other career areas.
Assessment: This author provides the unique advice often offered by sage classmates to colleagues immersed in the process. He stakes out broad goals to cover, and his success is somewhat diminished by this lack of focus. He is very successful in providing wise counsel to the student applying to the surgical subspecialty match. He may have done better to deliver an approach to this area in the context of all four years of medical school, rather than tackling advice related to all aspects of medical school.
