Overview

The second edition of this book, originally published in 1981, is the result of a collaborative effort of pathologists from 6 countries. It is more extensive than the first edition. Renal adenomas have been represented in more detail. Several new entities unrecognized in 1981 have been discussed including metanephric adenoma, chromophobe carcinoma, and renal medullary carcinoma. More extensive definition and discussion of nephroblastic lesions is given including mesoblastic nephroma and cystic nephroma. Two new entities are included: clear cell carcinoma and rhabdoid tumor. A list of miscellaneous tumours such as small cell carcinoma, ossifying renal tumour, renal hamartoma, and nephrogenic adenofibroma is also added.

Description: This book is made up of four distinct sections. The first is a listing of all renal tumors by their histologic classification with their appropriate ICD and SNOMED code numbers. Next are written definitions and explanatory notes on each histologic classification, followed by TNM staging and excellent photomicrographs illustrating all tumor types.
Purpose: The purpose is to present a succinct presentation of the standardized nomenclature with the histological criteria for each type of tumor. In this second edition there is an update of tumor classification and definitions.
Audience: All medical practitioners who need to accurately diagnose renal tumors or record survival after treatment are the audience, which includes urologists, nephrologists, and anatomic pathologists and their paramedical personnel and/or their students.
Features: The illustrations are rectangular, two to a page with good diagnosis terminology and pattern descriptions as legends. Generally these colored photomicrographs are very good. At the end there is a three-page alphabetical index, not much more than the initial classification list.
Assessment: This is a useful, small, concise listing of all renal cell tumors with illustrations that uses the newest internationally accepted terminology (i.e., medullary fibroma is now renomedullary interstitial cell tumor). Unfortunately, to my thinking, Perlmann's benign clear cell lined multicystic tumor is here called unequivocal renal cell carcinoma. This is a useful book, but expensive for its size.
