About the Author

Mark Walston is an award-winning writer and historian whose numerous books, essays, popular features, and documentaries have explored an array of American subjects, from eighteenth-century slave culture to nineteenth-century occasional verse to twentieth-century shopping malls. He formerly served as a historian with the State of Maryland and the United States Department of the Treasury, and was president and CEO of Concept Foundry, the design and communications firm based in Bethesda, Maryland.
