Overview

James Fenimore Cooper was born in Burlington, New Jersey on September 15, 1789. He lived most of his life in Cooperstown, New York (established by his father William). Cooper attended Yale university but was expelled. He joined the US Navy as a Midshipman which was to provide much influence and research materials for his later writings. A Naval historian as well his works were widely received though some thought parts were not as accurate as they should be. However he is forever associated with one great book – Last Of The Mohicans. His output was prolific and included the famed Leatherstocking series. For a short period in the mid 1820’s he moved his family to Europe to attempt to gain a better income from his books and to have his children educated better. He was wildly popular as an author with his blend of history and romance. Here 'Home has Found' details a fascinating insight to his view on life. He died of dropsy on September 14, 1851, the day before his 62nd birthday.

About the Author

The creator of two genres that became staples of American literature — the sea romance and the frontier adventure — James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851) was born in New Jersey, raised in the wilderness of New York, and spent five years at sea before embarking on his successful writing career. Among Cooper’s many novels, his best-known books are the five "Leatherstocking" tales — including The Deerslayer and The Last of the Mohicans — each featuring the fictional hero Natty Bumppo.
