Life in post-Civil War Colorado is often confining for headstrong Abbie Martin. As she nears marriageable age, her good looks and reputation for being a daredevil begin to attract admirers, among them her devoted childhood friend, Blake McConnel. Yet Blake is soon pushed aside when dashing Southerner Montgomery Farrel arrives in town. Montgomery is older than Abbie and is reluctant to admit he loves her. By the time he realizes the depth of his feelings, he has become reacquainted with his childhood sweetheart and has married her. A charmingly written lead character is the highlight of an otherwise pedestrian romance from new author Heitzmann. An overabundance of supporting characters and highly convenient plot twists further undermine the story, which does not in any case focus strongly on Christian life. Recommended only for larger collections.
Honor's Pledge
Abigail Martin feels at home in her rough western town. After she visits Montgomery Farrell at his nearby ranch, however, she is intrigued by his civilized manner and well-appointed house. Montgomery is attracted to Abigail, too, and begins courting her. But a deathbed promise will soon separate them. Can Montgomery be strong enough to bear the burden of his honor? And can Abigail understand the importance of his pledge? When the two finally reunite, it is with a greater appreciation of the faith and strength they have gained through God's guidance. Kate Forbes' lyrical narration conveys each emotion Abigail and Montgomery feel, from despair to elation.
