Description: This book is volume 122 in the long-running Vitamins and Hormones series. Epigenetics is the term coined to describe the observation that two cells possessing identical genomes, but different histories, can exhibit and transmit differing phenotypes to their offspring. Research has shown that this behavior is the result of environmentally-modulated covalent modifications that affect gene expression by non-mutational means, specifically the methylation of DNA, the phosphorylation and acetylation of histones and other chromatins, and the expression of small, non-coding RNA molecules. Many of these processes are subject to hormonal control.
Purpose: According to the author, the book aims to cover "the complex interplay between hormones and epigenetics, highlighting the many ways in which these two processes can influence one another and the implications for our health and well-being." Epigenetics has revolutionized our understanding of gene expression and its control, while offering the potential for the therapeutic manipulation of gene expression by modulating the activities of the histone- and DNA-(de)modifying enzymes or the introduction of small regulatory RNA molecules. In recent years, realization of the biological importance and potential uses of epigenetics has elevated this phenomenon to the forefront of international biomolecular research and development.
Audience: This book targets individuals curious about and relatively new to the subject of epigenetics.
Features: The book lacks a discernable organizing theme. Topics covered range from the highly focused epigenetic modifications in the intestines of amphibians undergoing metamorphosis to the expansive effects of thyroid hormones to the psychological epigenetic effects of meditation and epigenetics of stress and mindfulness. In general, the chapters tend to be poorly illustrated and descriptive in nature. The book would have benefited from a more detailed introduction outlining the author's vision and rationale for the eclectic range of topics selected. The short preface written by AI does little to inspire confidence in the rigor of its contents.
Assessment: New books are appearing on a regular basis on the topic of epigenetics, with titles such as Handbook of Epigenetics: The New Molecular and Medical Genetics, 3rd Edition, Tollefsbol (Elsevier, 2022), Medical Epigenetics, 2nd Edition, Tollefsbol (Elsevier, 2021), Epigenetic Cancer Therapy, 2nd Edition, Gray (Elsevier, 2023), and Hormones and Reality: Epigenetic Regulation of the Endocrine System, Torday (Elsevier, 2022). It is difficult to see where the current book fits within this menu of book choices, as it lacks a defined, organizing objective and, in several chapters, depth of coverage.
