To repair her image, she agrees to a profile written by lesbian cultural critic Aly Ray Carter. Aly has a reputation as a lothario—“she pulls straight girls. And then kind of discards them when she’s done”—and their meeting awakens feelings Lola previously ignored. This crush curdles into hatred, however, when Aly turns Lola’s profile into a scathing takedown. At an all time low in her personal and professional life, Lola escapes to the Hamptons for the rest of the summer—only to find that Aly has rented the neighboring house. Caught in an intense, sensual vortex, the women go from enemies to lovers. Tinx mines plenty of heat from their whirlwind relationship while not shying away from its flaws, including Lola’s selfishness and Aly’s control issues. Ultimately, the romance is a vehicle for Lola’s growth as she comes into her own and embraces her sexuality. Hard-line romance fans may not be entirely satisfied with the ending, but there’s plenty here to entice. (May)
