Overview

Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller's songwriting and production talents were top-notch, and their '50s and early-'60s hits with the likes of the Coasters, the Drifters, and others are classics from top to bottom -- as songs, as performances, and as wonderfully produced records. This fun set collects several of them, including the original version of "Hound Dog" by Big Mama Thornton, the Drifters' magnificent "There Goes My Baby," Aretha Franklin's stellar "Spanish Harlem," and Ben E. King's "Stand by Me." It's just the tip of the iceberg, naturally, but it's a fun and classic set from first to last. Leiber & Stoller were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1985 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. This is why. ~ Steve Leggett
