About the Author

Sir Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904) was a Welsh-born American journalist and explorer. Born a bastard to a young Welsh mother, Stanley emigrated to New Orleans in 1859. After brief service in the Confederate Army, Stanley switched sides and fought for the United States. After the Civil War, he became a journalist for the NEW YORK HERALD, where he served as a foreign correspondent. In 1869, he accepted the challenge of finding Livingstone, suffering great hardship before doing so. His adventures in Africa made Stanley internationally famous.
