Overview

In the summer of 1998 Patrice Burkhardt traveled to Giverny, France for the first time to paint in Monet's Garden. She spent ten days communing in ArtStudy Giverny, an artist colony residing near the famous garden. Patrice kept a journal of her time spent in and around the little town where Monet lived close to 40 years. Her experiences proved to be a significant turning point in her artistic journey.

This book offers a resplendent, yet lighthearted view of Monet's France which hopes to inspire artists and travelers alike yearning to travel and paint in faraway places...

Her artist statement reads:
Art is a means of expression. Some art is easily realized; others are private and personal and can only be realized through knowledge, study and intuition.

Ordinary beauty, that which is simple and undiscovered, inspires me. I prefer to 'enlighten' the reality of my subject matter by playfully layering warm and cool colors in order to illuminate and accentuate the beauty I see in nature.

Roger de Piles said it best, "Painting should call out to the viewer....and the surprised viewer should go to it, as if entering a conversation" (Cours de Pientre par Principles, 1676).
