Little Shaggy is a fuzzy little monster, but he has a BIG problem. Everyone keeps calling him little! All day long his family asks him if he wants a little snack, a little story, or if he's a little grumpy. Well Little Shaggy has a little news:

"I'M NOT LITTLE!"

He throws a big tantrum, but his mother is able to calm him down by giving him a little news: he has a new baby sister, and he is now a BIG brother! Shaggy now suddenly doesn't want to be big, but his mom tells him that he'll always be mama's little angel.

She is also the author of The Candy Bar Cookbook: Baking with America's Favorite Candy and the Heidi Heckelbeck chapter book series. Alison lives in California with her husband, Ric, and their son, Hunter.

Australian illustrator Thomas creates a family of monsters with thick, candy-colored fur and big, gleaming eyes (well, one eye apiece, in the case of Shaggy and his mother). Their handsome suburban home is typical, although their fireplace has a set of fangs. But Shaggy has a little problem, namely that his family calls him “little” all the time. Readers will sympathize with Shaggy as countless “little” remarks from his parents and grandparents pile up (“Would you like a little snack?”), sometimes with a subtle, monster-themed twist: “Where’s your little chew toy?” And they’ll understand when Shaggy finally loses it: “I’m not little!” he roars, standing on the kitchen counter to make himself larger. Fortunately, Shaggy’s announcement is met with patience, affection, and the revelation that he’s no longer the littlest member of the family. Inches (I Can Save the Ocean!) strikes a fine balance between goopy sentiment and snarky humor as Shaggy’s parents discover that words spoken with affection don’t always carry the message they intend. A scrappy underdog has a meltdown over a short lifetime of slights but learns quickly that there are worse things than being small. Little Shaggy is a tiny monster the size and shape of a furry car chamois. And he's got a large problem: he's had it up to here with the word "little" as it's delivered by his parents and grandparents. The word seems to define every experience of his life, from eating cereal to taking walks to reading bedtime stories. One day, Little Shaggy rages, declaring, "I am not a Little Buddy!" as he throws toys, pulls out his hair, and stomps around with his, yes, little feet. The joke turns out to be that for all his stress, Little Shaggy turns to crying mush when he's introduced to his new baby sister. "But I DON'T WANT TO BE BIG!" he wails. With skewed but lavishly detailed artwork that surrounds Shaggy's drama with cozy, domestic touchstones, the story is the perfect object lesson for any runt, pipsqueak, half-pint, or shrimp with a complex about the unfairness of life. Shaggy's expressions of annoyance, frustration, and ultimately, defiance, are expertly conveyed, and there's no skimping on the cleverness of how the L word is deployed throughout. Rarely is a full-blown temper tantrum as much fun or as instructive to witness. (Picture book. 4-8)
