Description: This book is a concise but comprehensive "how-to" of the interventional procedures encountered by a breast imager.
Purpose: The purpose is to bring together, in one easy-to-understand reference, the rationale for, the explanation of, and the issues related to breast imaging-directed diagnosis and intervention. With concise explanations, step-by-step instruction, and ample quality illustrations and pictures, the authors' objectives are met and exceeded.
Audience: The intended audience, according to the author, is primarily radiologists, but also surgeons, pathologists and anyone else involved in breast imaging and intervention. The book assumes a certain level of understanding and experience in breast imaging and intervention and as such is geared towards upper level residents and fellows as well as radiologists seeking to expand their imaging and intervention capabilities. For experienced breast imaging specialists and others involved in the care of patients with breast disease, it fills in gaps and updates and expands their understanding and approaches.
Features: The book covers the spectrum of breast imaging-guided intervention, using every currently accepted method. It also discusses equipment, patient sedation, quality control and medicolegal issues. The book uses graphics, x-rays and photographs well in tight correlation with step-by-step instruction of breast interventional procedures. The graphic representation of the needle in stereotactic biopsies, their possible positions and how to recognize and troubleshoot errors, discussed in Chapter 5, is particularly useful. Color plates of the pathology would have improved this book.
Assessment: As a primer for performing breast interventional procedures, I doubt there is a more complete, yet comprehendible source. Certainly, it should be a "requisite" for any radiologist involved in breast imaging-guided intervention.
