Description: Traumatic brain injury is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States. This book provides an important source of images of these injuries.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive resource for the interpretation of head and face injury. This is a valuable, important objective and the book presents images and discussions of imaging, epidemiology, pathophysiology, decision making, etc., most of the important aspects of head trauma.
Audience: The audience includes radiology residents, fellows, general radiologists, emergency physicians, and trauma surgeons, according to the authors. The authors are neuroradiologists with plenty of experience on head and neck trauma. Harborview Hospital is the only level 1 trauma center in the Northwest.
Features: The book is arranged in concise chapters and uses illustrations, including a large number of high quality CT and MR images, to cover most of the important aspects of head trauma including epidemiology, decision making, pathophysiology, penetrating, blunt, skull base, and facial injuries, pediatrics, advanced imaging, and follow-up imaging. The book is impressive because of the large number of high quality images and well-written interpretation. The introduction of advanced imaging as a separate chapter is appropriate. An additional chapter on the technique of basic imaging interpretation, such as windowing, and pitfalls would be valuable for inexperienced readers.
Assessment: This is a valuable book that offers the authors' clinical experience and classic cases in the area of traumatic head and neck injury. Although there are other similar books available, the conciseness and large number of high quality images make this book stand out.
