Description: This case study-based book covers immunohematology (blood bank), transfusion medicine, hemostasis, and cellular therapy. This third edition is an update to the previous version, which was published in 2018.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to "teach learners in the practical art" of these laboratory medicine disciplines. This is quite a worthy objective, once again very well met by this edition.
Audience: This practical, case-based approach is ideal for learners at any stage in their career. The book is intended for students and practitioners in clinical pathology or hematology. It is also of use to healthcare professionals who are curious about blood bank testing in general. The book definitely meets the needs of its intended audience. The authors are most credible authorities in this area, as they authored the two previous (and excellent) editions.
Features: The book consists of case studies that are surprisingly comprehensive for the issues affecting these laboratory medicine disciplines. The current edition provides 98 case studies, compared to 56 in the first edition. The book is very contemporary in that it even includes a case involving chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy. The case study titles are humorous, attention-grabbing, and compelling to read. I also appreciate the standardized presentation format and questions, and the targeted and concise answers addressing both laboratory details and clinical correlations. I would like to see the next edition include case ratings ("basic" to "advanced") in the table of contents and optimize the photomicrographs for faithful color reproduction and correction of dark backgrounds.
Assessment: This is a great book for mastering these laboratory disciplines. The practical and standardized case study approach is extraordinarily effective.
