About the Author

Mary Louise Turgeon, EdD, MLS(ASCP)CM, is an educator, author, and consultant in medical laboratory science education. Her career includes roles as a community college professor, Medical Laboratory Technology program director, undergraduate and graduate university professor, Medical Laboratory Science program director, and departmental chairperson. Dr. Turgeon is currently an ad hoc educational content specialist for the College of Professional Studies, Northeastern University, Boston,
and maintains an active clinical laboratory science consulting practice. Her practice, Mary L. Turgeon and Associates, focuses on new program development, curriculum revision, and increasing teaching effectiveness through the use of technology and interactive teaching strategies.

Description: This is the seventh edition of a book true to its title, Immunology and Serology in Laboratory Medicine. The previous edition was published in 2018. The online resources consist simply of additional review questions and case studies.
Purpose: The purpose is to "facilitate problem-based learning, needed by medical laboratory technician (MLT) and medical laboratory science (MLS) students to achieve high scores on board certification or licensure examinations upon graduation and master entry-level professional competencies for career success," and to "capture and share the latest knowledge and emerging practices in an ever-changing field." These most worthy objectives are well met by this edition.
Audience: The intended audience is MLS or MLT students, but the book also would be valuable to practicing MLSs or MLTs wanting a refresher and quick updates. It also might be useful to medical students, advanced practice providers, or practitioners early in their careers wanting detail on immunological or serological laboratory testing. The author is a well-known expert in many areas of laboratory medicine with an unrivaled clarity and conciseness of presentation.
Features: This book covers immunology from the very basics of the immune system to the technical details of the broad spectrum of immunological testing (e.g., ouchterlony(!), hemagglutination, next generation sequencing). The layout is beautiful — well delineated differently colored sections highlight key concepts, tables succinctly summarize key learnings, stunning figures (many from ARUP Laboratories and jazzed up with color) and review questions. References are either cited with each individual figure and/or captured in an entire section at the end. Priceless is figure 9.2 matching the cathode and anode with the electrophoretogram for protein electrophoresis — finally I can use this figure to settle the all-too-often (and sometimes heated) debate about which electrode is which! And talk about being current — I initially and naively (and smugly!) smiled at a brief appendix D on SARS CoV2, only to then leaf through the book to find a full 10 chapters on it, including current information. A few wishes for the next edition: expand the discussion on the postzone effect (e.g., cryptococcal antigen detection) and update CLSI references to match current state (e.g., CLSI GP2-A4+ cited is now CLSI QMS03-Ed4).
Assessment: Wow — this is a fabulous updated edition. It is perfect for anyone involved in this area of laboratory medicine practice or testing.
