About the Author

Dougal Dixon studied geology and paleogeography at the University of St Andrews, Scotland. He is an award-winning author specializing in the earth sciences and evolution with many children's books and encyclopaedias to his name. He has acquired a reputation for putting over concepts in a totally novel way. Along these lines, his most notable books are After Man: A Zoology of the Future in which he explained the workings of evolution by postulating the types of animals that may evolve in times to come, and The New Dinosaurs, in which he described the zoogeography of the world by describing what life might be like today had the dinosaurs not become extinct. 

Daniele Fabbri is an award winning illustrator who lives and works between Ravenna and Reggio Emilia, in Italy. He has lived all across the world including in America, England, France, and Germany, where he has worked in advertising, publishing, children’s books, magazines, and animation.

K-Gr 2-This introductory nonfiction picture book opens with an illustrated explanation of a paleontologist's tools; readers see the tools in action throughout the remainder of the book. Dual-page illustrations of dig sites fold back to reveal panoramic images of the prehistoric creatures. On the pages that follow the time period's dig site illustrations, vibrant images of the creatures are portrayed with short descriptive statements. The author refers readers back to the dig site image and indicates where each creature's skeletal remains can be located. The visual contrast between the illustrations of the dinosaurs in their respective habitats and time periods against those of the paleontologist's dig sites will help young readers differentiate the past and present. The brief instructions explaining how to find the remains in each site adds an interactive component. A highlighted box inspires further curiosity by asking "What else can we learn?" The question is answered with additional information using the clues found at a dig site.
