Roosevelt’s first novel is brought to life by Craig Wasson’s fine reading. As narrator, Wasson’s voice is gentle and calls little attention to itself as he projects vivid personality portraits. Meet Mark, the confused young associate who’s wondering about the toll his career may take, and Peter Morgan, the coldly calculating senior partner of their powerful Washington law firm. In addition to illuminating the different motivations of the characters, Wasson does an excellent job with the terminology of the law--which is important since this novel is as much about the life of a big law firm as it is about the lawyers who populate it and the mysteries they untangle.
