Description: This is a popular and practical textbook that allows industrial hygiene students and other scientists to perform basic measurements. It covers sampling, monitoring, and evaluation techniques that can be used to identify physical, chemical, and biological risks in the workplace as well as important ergonomic factors. The book contains 27 chapters or units and three appendixes covering sampling strategies, reports, and case study answers. Due to the untimely death of James P. Kohn, Michael S. Bisesi, is the surviving author.
Purpose: This is an introductory reference for environmental and occupational health and safety students and practitioners. It is as useful as a laboratory manual as it is as a textbook. Both editions have arisen from the authors' teaching notes and handouts. Many of the protocols derive from those contained in field operation manuals. Such manuals are often overwhelming in their complexity, necessitating this book.
Audience: This author indicates the book is intended for novice safety and health students and practitioners. This book will serve as a standard of practice for students and others being introduced to industrial hygiene sampling. The authors are established experts in the field.
Features: The second edition adds new information on industrial hygiene sampling strategies and statistical analyses, and provides links and additional references. The forms section should prove particularly useful to the practitioners who read or reference this book. Future editions would profit from an electronic media version of at least the forms and maybe additional material derived from this important book.
Assessment: This book will occupy shelves along with other accepted references in industrial hygiene. It could be argued that the quality assurance information should be integrated into the units or chapters, but this is minor. I would like to see a slightly more detailed discussion of sample processing through stages of sampling, preparative steps leading to analysis and then appropriate data treatment. Evaluation ultimately depends upon all of these steps. Given the breadth of the occupational and environmental hygiene disciplines, this second edition will be extensively referenced and read.
