Overview

In this book, Prof. Nanda has examined the causes of the current occurrences of conflict here and there in the country and attributed the same to the tardy growth of scientific temper among and faulty grasp of democracy and secularism by many of the politicians. The author proved his grasp of Indian and world affairs in this widely acclaimed book Science and Technology in India's Transformation (Concept, 1986). Are conflicts essential for progress? No. But resolution of conflicts is essential. Progress involves change in environment, changes in inter-relationships and ultimately an alteration in values. All this could result in dissatisfaction and disillusionment of some. Unless there is widespread involvement of all the people and assured attention to all, conflicts may take an ugly shape. Conflict management is certainly possible through democratic, secular and scientific approach. The author has analyzed the merits and de-merits of centralization and de-centralization. He believes that by setting good precedents and establishing healthy traditions, the inter-State and Centre-State relations can become warm and friendly as well as beneficial to the country. True culture consists in consideration of others rather than of self only.
