The chapter on tuberculosis is an excellent and relevant source of information about this disease in elderly people. Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive review of infectious diseases in older persons, with an emphasis on infections in long-term care facilities.
Audience: The audience is clinicians and their trainees who treat infections in older persons, infection control specialists, pharmacists, and long-term care medical directors.
Features: In the first of three parts, concepts and principles of infections and aging are discussed before the book delves into the nature of infections, which includes an excellent chapter on functional assessment in infectious diseases. The second part is common infections, which covers the full range of infectious diseases by organ system and type of infection. The third and final part on unique infectious disease problems covers long-term care facilities, infections in diabetics, vaccinations, and sexually transmitted diseases and HIV disease.
Assessment: This is a thorough and lucid review of an important area of geriatric medicine. The book is well edited and uses a consistent style from chapter to chapter. Excellent illustrations and useful tables and algorithms appear throughout the book. Key points are set aside for emphasis and convenience. This update includes a chapter on West Nile fever and SARS. It is a most useful reference and deserves a wide readership.
