About the Author

Dr. Colleen Carroll is a gardener and educator who planted her first seed, a sunflower, at three years old. That childhood fascination with nature, gardening, and everything outdoors led to her career path as an environmental educator, author, and CEO of NatureTalks. Dr. Carroll founded NatureTalks with a simple, single mission: to help people connect to nature. She does this through telling stories about gardeners and their gardens. Her storytelling began in the 1990s. Working on her masters in social ecology, she traveled across the state of Hawai’i, visiting Molokai, Hawai’i, Oahu, and Maui to gather stories from teachers and administrators about the joys and challenges of creating school gardens. Today, Dr. Carroll actively supports school gardens, community outreach, education, and the environment. Currently, she is the Kauai Representative on the Statewide School Garden and Farm to School Hui in Hawaii, as well as local coordinator for school gardens and a strong advocate for Farm-2-School programs. Her efforts include introducing salad bars to public school cafeterias and supporting teachers as they grow their school gardens.
