Description: This has been the compass for institutional review boards (IRB) for many years. This revised third edition is the next step in maintaining that leadership position. Its small pocket size makes it easy to carry to every meeting.
Purpose: The introduction outlines the purpose as providing an additional guide to an IRB member's common sense and good intentions. These are important objectives in light of some of the misguided mistakes of the past and the relentless push for profits and publication medicine faces today. The authors and contributors continue their outstanding leadership and excellence in the field of IRB ethics and responsibility.
Audience: The focus of the handbook is on IRB members, but it is a tremendous reference for all researchers to understand how the IRB will review their protocols and the basic philosophy of the IRB.
Features: It starts with the basic tenets of human research volunteer protection, citing the mission of the IRB and a brief history of IRBs. It then addresses many of the unique aspects of volunteer protection that an IRB member would not commonly have experienced, but are highly germane to research protocols, e.g. advertising for volunteers, legislation, and conundrums such as pediatric populations, why these are important, and the unique associated challenges. These are not easy questions and the handbook cannot give recipes for success, but it does provide an approach to consider and begin the discussions.
Assessment: The handbook provides a structured approach to the ethics and fundamental principles of protecting human research volunteers. This update absolutely should be required reading for every active member of an IRB as well as for researchers and principal investigators.
