Description: Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) has become a widely used treatment option. This book expands upon the basics of that treatment approach with practice examples of how to apply it in clinical practice.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide novice EMDR clinicians with guidance on commonly encountered problems when implementing EMDR. It is a follow-up guide once EMDR training is complete, not a replacement for EMDR training.
Audience: The appropriate audience includes psychologists, psychiatrists, and other mental health practitioners. The authors are practicing therapists who are familiar with EMDR.
Features: The book begins with a review of common issues in the clinical delivery of EMDR. Interestingly, contact lenses and eye conditions are one of the issues listed, but the treatment has been successfully used with blind individuals, so this is only an issue if one dogmatically believes that eye movement is essential to EMDR. While the use of small boxed vignettes or common pitfalls is creative, there is little discussion of these vignettes or pitfalls to guide clinicians. As an example, secondary gain is brought up as an issue to consider, but there is no advice on how to handle it or whether therapy should even proceed with an individual who is invested in maintaining a facade of symptoms. These issues are somewhat better addressed at the end of chapters with a Q&A section, but even this covers just a few points with a short paragraph response. Some are as short as "check with a physician" and do not contain empirically-based recommendations. Many of the problems that arise in the case examples pertain to being a new therapist in general, and are not particular to EMDR, but they offer useful scripts to illustrate ways to approach working with patients. The index is fairly short and the references are rather selective, leaving out opposing views.
Assessment: This may help novice clinicians to become aware of common pitfalls in early practice, but the guidance and advice on how to handle these problems is limited or not addressed for some issues. It is most useful as a guide to "what not to do."
