About the Author

Jerome B. Grieder is Professor of History at Brown University. Born in Canton, China, he received his Ph.D. in history and Far Eastern languages at Harvard University. His previous book, Hu Shih and the Chinese Renaissance: Liberalism in the Chinese Revolution, 1917-1937, was awarded the J.K. Fairbank Prize by the American Historical Association.
